Its official: Google is in the auction

Hear that America? That’s the sound of the hammer dropping on our beloved cartel of carriers. Google’s bid for the 700MHz “C Block” is on. Eric Schmidt, Google Chairman and CEO, says the following:”We believe it’s important to put our money where our principles are. Consumers deserve more competition and innovation than they have in today’s wireless world. No matter which bidder ultimately prevails, the real winners of this auction are American consumers who likely will see more choices than ever before in how they access the Internet.”

The bidding begins on January 24th with a minimum of $4.6 billion required for the open-access C Block. Wake the kids, phone the neighbors, it’s going to get ugly fast.

PS3 sales getting better

A new report from Game News identifies some pretty staggering sales numbers for the Playstation 3 over the past year. Black Friday was particularly kind to the Sony console, with sales up 245 percent over the same time last year. That’s great news for Sony’s sales department, but it’s just a small piece of a larger picture of victory. The company has seen unit sales increase by 178 percent, and overall sales $’s increase by 154 percent over the course of the past week, entering the holiday season with bang. This is due, in large part, to the recent price drop for the 80GB model, combined with the introduction of the 40GB model.

Artificial Beach With a Real Beach 300 Meters Away

odome1.jpg

The Ocean Dome, the world’s largest indoor beach, Kyushu Island, Japan (about 1,500 kilometers south of Tokyo) — 300 meters in length and 100 meters in width, with a height of 38 meters, it can accommodate 10,000 people.

odome2.jpg

Designed by the Mitsubishi Heavy Industrial Group and opened in July 1993 at a cost of 200 billion yen ($2 billion), the Ocean Dome was never profitable and recently closed.

odome3.jpg

A heated ocean with a width of 140 meters sends 13,500 tons of salt-free water sweeping across 600 tons of polished marble chips that constitute a 85-metre long shoreline, ringed by a three-story promenade of shops. Every fifteen minutes, the volcano smokes to life. Every hour, on the hour, it spews fake flames.

Nintendo Sells Over 650,000 Wii’s in Two Weeks

“Earlier today, Nintendo revealed that they have sold more Wii’s in the last two weeks than in any week since the systems initial launch last November.

Nintendo has reportedly sold over 350,000 Wii’s last week, during the Thanksgiving holiday, whereas they moved over 300,000 the week prior. The last time sales were this high in a two week time frame was when the system launched and sold over 600,000 units in its first eight days of release.

“I couldn’t find a single Wii system on the shelves – literally as I was walking into a Wal-Mart at 11 a.m., someone was walking out with the last one,” stated Fils-Aime. “Consumers are buying every game we can put into the system.”

Earlier this year, Nintendo predicted that they would sell 17.5 million Wii’s before the end of the fiscal year, which ends on March 31. Currently, Nintendo is manufacturing 1.8 million Wii’s a month to reach demand worldwide.”

Apple store at 3 a.m.

  • Internet users: Checking craigslist for apartments, checking their e-mail, looking for jobs.
  • Stoned people: Like a moth to a bright light, the Apple store apparently attracts high people. I smelled it on at least 3 people.
  • Buyers: It appeared that a few people were buying things.

A window for the windowless

The Bright Blind comes from the minds of designers Makoto Hirahara and Hisakazu Nabeshima. It’s a window shade that hangs on your wall and is backlit by electroluminescent sheets to provide simulated daylight in even the darkest of offices. Just like a real window shade, brightness is adjusted by twirling the plastic shade control.

How-to: Clean your favorite gadgets

computerdust.jpg

Flat-Panel Screens

If the image on your LCD or plasma set isn’t as high-def as it’s supposed to be, the problem might not be the technology; it may be the dust. Windex and other glass cleaners can leave a hazy residue on plasma and LCD screens. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mix of filtered or bottled water and isopropyl alcohol, then lightly mist it onto a very soft, nonabrasive cloth, such as a cotton T-shirt or a large microfiber dust cloth. (Paper towels may scratch the screen.)

Desktop PCs

You can clean your PC’s exterior with a damp cloth, but the real mess is inside the case, where dust restricts airflow. Remove the case’s top or side panel and use a can of compressed air to blow dust from components such as the fans, CPU heat sink and video card. Always hold the can upright and position the case so its opening is on the side, to ensure that blown dust doesn’t resettle on your components.

Speakers

Clean speaker cabinets and removable plastic or metal grilles with a soft, damp cloth. Carefully vacuum fabric grilles from both sides. If the grilles are really dirty, you can remove them, rinse them in warm water and let them air-dry. If they aren’t removable, use a damp cloth to clean them, but be careful not to get any water on the drivers inside. Don’t clean the drivers unless they’re covered in dust. If they are, use a clean, dry paintbrush to gently sweep away the dust.

Printers

You can clean any printer’s exterior with a damp cloth, but interior cleaning differs for inkjet and laser printers. For inkjets, open the ink-cartridge access panel and use a dry cloth or foam or chamois cleaning swabs to remove any dust or ink. Then run your printer’s head-cleaning software to clear the ink nozzle. For laser printers, remove the toner cartridge and wipe the toner cavity and rollers with a dry cloth, while avoiding the transfer roller that sits directly under the cartridge. Resist the urge to clean the optical mirror near the toner cavity; you’ll only distort it.

Laptops

The tips for cleaning flat-panel sets also apply to laptop screens, while a damp cloth can be used on the shell and touchpad. Use compressed air to dust off the keyboard, ports and fans — but first stick a toothpick in any fans so they won’t be damaged by overspinning. Your user’s guide should show how to detach the keyboard so you can use the can of compressed air on the internal components. If your keys are gunky and the user’s guide indicates that they are removable, use swabs and undiluted isopropyl alcohol to remove any residue.

Cell phones

A soft cloth dampened with a 60/40 mixture of water and alcohol is the ideal way to wipe off your phone and kill bacteria. If the keys are somewhat unresponsive (and you don’t mind potentially voiding your warranty), follow instructions in the manual to pop the front and rear panels off your phone, and remove the battery and keypad. Use a swab dampened with undiluted alcohol to gently clean the circuit board beneath the keypad, and the power/data connector on the side or bottom of the phone.

Video Cameras

For smudges on the lens, use a chamois cloth and an alcohol/water solution. Many tape formats, such as MiniDV and Digital8, use internal lubricants that can form deposits on read/write heads and various rollers. If your image quality is suffering, run a cleaning cassette through the camera for five to 10 seconds. If the camera eats tapes, clean off any gunk on both the heads and capstans with an alcohol-dampened swab, then allow them to air-dry before using.
